A long weekend in the Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya rock fortress and the sacred hill capital.
Four days is not enough to circle Sri Lanka, and any itinerary that tries to squeeze in the south coast too will leave you spending more time in vehicles than anywhere worth stopping. The honest move with four days is to pick one region and do it properly — the Cultural Triangle and Kandy is the strongest short route: two UNESCO sites, one sacred city, and transfers under 3 hours each.
This works well as a stopover en route elsewhere in Asia, or a long weekend if you're already in the region. It skips the beaches and the hill-country train entirely — if either of those matters more to you, our 5-day itinerary swaps this for Ella instead.
Arrive on a weekday if you can. Sigiriya and the Temple of the Tooth are both far busier on weekends with domestic visitors.
Bandaranaike Airport is 8 km from Negombo — take a tuk-tuk (about £3) or pre-arranged transfer. With only four days, resist the urge to push straight on to Sigiriya the same day unless you land before noon. Negombo is a colonial fishing town with a beach and good seafood — check in, eat grilled crab or prawn curry on the lagoon, and get an early night.
Drive 3 hours northeast to Sigiriya (hire a driver for the day, around £25, or bus via Dambulla). Climb the rock fortress before 8 am — the light is beautiful and the heat manageable. In the afternoon, visit Dambulla Cave Temple, a 15-minute drive away.
Head south to Kandy (2.5–3 hours by bus or driver). Check into your guesthouse then visit the Temple of the Tooth for the evening puja ceremony at 6:30 pm — one of the most atmospheric experiences in Sri Lanka. Walk the lake at dusk.
Kandy to the airport is about 3.5 hours by road. If your flight is in the evening, spend the morning at Peradeniya Botanical Gardens or the Kandy market before the drive down. If your flight is early, arrange transport the night before — the last stretch through Colombo traffic is unpredictable.
The rock is unbearable by 10 am. Staying in Sigiriya village rather than Dambulla means you can walk to the gate before the tour buses arrive.
With only four days, a private driver (around £100–120 total for the route) is worth it — public transport works but eats into time you don't have. Agree the full route and price upfront.
Sigiriya/Kandy to any beach town is 3–5 hours each way. Adding a coastal stop on a 4-day trip means a full day lost to transfers for one night on the beach — not worth it.
Four days is enough for one region done properly — the Cultural Triangle and Kandy is the strongest short route. It is not enough to add the coast or the hill-country train without turning the trip into mostly transfers.
Sigiriya first. It requires an early climb before the heat, so arriving with a rested night behind you matters more there than in Kandy, where the main activity is the evening temple ceremony.
