Seven days in Sri Lanka sounds tight, but the island is small enough that you can hit four genuinely different landscapes without feeling rushed. This route is the one most first-time visitors do — and for good reason. It flows well, uses the scenic train, and ends on the south coast.
The key to making 7 days work is keeping transfers efficient and spending two nights at each main stop rather than one. One-night stays feel like you're always packing and unpacking; two nights lets you breathe and explore properly.
This itinerary works best arriving on a Sunday or Monday so the Kandy-to-Ella train (which sells out fast on weekends) falls mid-week.
Bandaranaike Airport is 8 km from Negombo — take a tuk-tuk (about £3) or pre-arranged transfer. Negombo is a colonial fishing town with a beach and good seafood. Check in, eat grilled crab or prawn curry on the lagoon, and get an early night. You need the sleep.
Drive 3 hours northeast to Sigiriya (tuk-tuk to bus station, then bus to Dambulla, then tuk-tuk to Sigiriya — or hire a driver for the day for around £25). Climb the rock fortress before 8 am if possible — the light is beautiful and the heat manageable. Book your Kandy–Ella train ticket tonight if you haven't already.
Head south to Kandy (3 hours by bus or driver). Check into your guesthouse then visit the Temple of the Tooth for the evening puja ceremony at 6:30 pm — this is one of the most atmospheric experiences in Sri Lanka. Walk the lake at dusk. Most guesthouses in Kandy look down over the city from the surrounding hills.
The Kandy–Ella train departs Kandy station around 8:47 am (check current schedule). The 6-hour journey climbs through tea estates and cloud forest. Sit on the right side of the train heading south for the best views. Arrive in Ella early afternoon — walk to the Nine Arches Bridge before sunset.
Rise early for Little Adam's Peak — a 45-minute hike with panoramic views over Ella Gap. The trail starts from a tea estate and is manageable for most fitness levels. Spend the afternoon visiting Ravana Falls or cycling through tea plantations. Ella's main street has good cafés with mountain views.
Take the bus or hire a driver from Ella to Galle (3–4 hours via Wellawaya or the southern expressway). Galle Fort is a UNESCO-listed Dutch colonial fortification — explore it on foot. The ramparts at sunset are superb. Stay inside the fort if budget allows; the boutique properties here are excellent.
Mirissa is 30 minutes from Galle — a gentle morning on the beach before heading back to Colombo for your flight. If your flight is in the evening, you have time for a whale watching trip from Mirissa harbour (Nov–Apr, departs 6:30 am, returns by 11 am). The southern expressway makes the Mirissa–Colombo airport run about 2 hours.
The Kandy–Ella train (Train #1005, the Podi Menike or Udarata Menike) sells out weeks in advance for first-class and second-class reserved seats. Book at bookme.lk the moment you know your dates.
Public transport works well for this route but adds time. A private driver for the full 7 days runs £200–280 total — roughly £30–40/day split between two people. Worth it if your time is limited.
