Two weeks of boutique stays, private sunsets, whale watching, and the world's most scenic train.
Sri Lanka is one of the best honeymoon destinations in Asia. It's smaller and less crowded than Thailand, more affordable than the Maldives, and far more varied — you can do jungle, mountains, colonial fort, and private beach all in one trip. The island has a genuinely well-developed boutique accommodation scene: small colonial villas, tea estate bungalows, and intimate beach resorts where the hosts know your name.
The honeymoon route follows the same anti-clockwise loop as the classic itinerary but slows down, stays in better properties, and adds private experiences — sunrise rock climbs, candlelit dinners on the ramparts, couples' ayurvedic treatments, and whale watching at dawn.
Budget for the honeymoon route: £120–250 per person per day covers boutique hotels (£80–180/night), good restaurants, private transfers, and experiences. The Maldives add-on (5 nights) makes a popular extension for the beach finale.
Start in Colombo and do it properly. The Cinnamon Grand or a boutique property in Colombo 7 is the right move. Spend an evening at the Ministry of Crab (booking essential — one of Asia's 50 best restaurants) or Nihonbashi for Japanese. Day two: Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face Green at sunset, and the ODEL shopping complex for last-minute items.
The Cultural Triangle is more romantic than you'd expect. Book a private sunrise climb of Sigiriya Rock (a licensed guide means no crowds at 5:30 am). Stay at a boutique jungle lodge rather than a chain hotel — places like Aliya Resort or smaller eco-lodges near Sigiriya have infinity pools with rock views. Evening: Dambulla cave temples lit by oil lamps.
Drive through cinnamon and rubber plantations to Kandy. Stop at a working spice garden for an ayurvedic body treatment or a cooking class. Check into a hillside boutique hotel with Kandy Lake views. Evening: Temple of the Tooth puja ceremony, then dinner at a restaurant overlooking the city lights.
Book first class on the Kandy–Ella train for the honeymoon experience. First class is air-conditioned with reserved seats; second class offers open windows and more atmosphere. The 6-hour journey through tea estates is perfect for reading, dozing, and photographing the passing scenery. Arrive in Ella to cool mountain air and a glass of something cold.
Stay in a tea estate bungalow above Ella for the full romantic experience — some properties have private plunge pools with views across Ella Gap. Day one: Nine Arches Bridge at dawn (bring a blanket — it's cold). Day two: private jeep safari to Rawana Ella Falls and a visit to a tea factory with a private tasting session.
Head south to the coast. Book a private boat charter for whale watching (more expensive than the group tours but worth it for honeymooners) — blue whales are reliably spotted Nov–Apr. Hiriketiya bowl beach (15 min from Dikwella) has a more intimate feel than Mirissa and good sunset restaurants. Consider a couples' ayurvedic treatment at a coastal wellness retreat.
Galle Fort is the honeymoon highlight of the south coast. Stay inside the fort walls — boutique properties here are gorgeous (try Fort Bazaar, 30 Pedlar Street, or Fort Printers). The rampart walk at sunset, dinner inside the fort by candlelight, and the Dutch Reformed Church are all memorably romantic. Add a half-day cooking class for something different.
Bentota is 90 minutes north of Galle on the expressway — Sri Lanka's established luxury spa destination. The Bentota River estuary is beautiful for boat safaris and kayaking. Upmarket resorts here have genuine ayurvedic wellness programmes. Spend your last nights relaxing before the airport transfer (1.5 hours north to Colombo).
The best small hotels in Galle Fort (Fort Bazaar, 30 Pedlar Street) and Ella (tea estate bungalows) book out 3–6 months ahead in peak season (December–March). Make reservations before you buy flights.
Sri Lanka to the Maldives by SriLankan Airlines is a 45-minute flight. Many honeymooners do 10 days in Sri Lanka followed by 5 nights in a Maldives overwater villa. It makes geographic sense and the contrast is extraordinary.
For a honeymoon, a dedicated private driver (hired for the full trip, £35–55/day) is the most romantic option — they become part of your trip, know the best spots, and handle logistics. Tuk-tuks are fun for towns; long transfers deserve a driver.
Excellent. Sri Lanka has a well-developed boutique accommodation scene (small colonial villas, tea estate bungalows, intimate beach resorts), great food, very safe infrastructure, and a huge variety of landscapes in a small area. It's considerably cheaper than the Maldives while offering more experiences.
December to March is peak season on the south and west coasts — warm, dry, and reliable for whale watching. The hill country (Ella, Kandy) is pleasant year-round but gets misty in the May–September wet season. If budget is flexible, December and January are the best months overall.
Very. SriLankan Airlines flies Colombo–Malé in 45 minutes, multiple times daily. Many honeymooners do 8–10 days in Sri Lanka then 5–7 nights in a Maldives resort. You'll need a separate booking for the Maldives (resort + speedboat transfer).
